Citizens are advised of inclement weather conditions beginning early Tuesday morning and continuing through
Wednesday.
Based on information from the National Weather Service, Emergency Management Coordinator John Waldo said
Huntsville residents may expect freezing temperatures beginning early Tuesday and continuing through
Wednesday morning. As well, a significant chance of two to four inches of snow, sleet and other precipitation has
also been reported.
As of Monday afternoon, the City of Huntsville will remain open for business on Tuesday, while Walker County,
the Huntsville Independent School District and the New Waverly Independent School District will be closed.
"A wintry precipitation window has been forecast for Tuesday, January 28 from 3 a.m. to 9 p.m.," Waldo said. "At
this point, we have a 20 to 40 percent chance of receiving two to four inches of snow, as well as sleet throughout
the day on Tuesday, and temperatures will be below freezing until mid-day on Wednesday.
"City crews will sand streets as needed, including overpasses and major roadways."
Walker County Emergency Management Coordinator Butch Davis said the Emergency Operations Center will be
fully activated beginning early Tuesday morning. Residents with questions or concerns may reach the EOC at
(936)435-8035.
According to HPD Lieutenant Jim Barnes, residents are asked to limit any roadway use to essential trips only,
and if a long distance must be travelled, to exercise extreme caution and budget additional time.
"With the Winter Storm Warning in effect for our area, it would be best to have as few drivers on the road as
possible," he said. "If you do have to drive, make sure to slow down, watch the roads, and be mindful of the
vehicles around you."
