The City of Huntsville started a routine maintenance process on its water distribution Wednesday which will continue
through October 22. This activity, which will primarily entail water main flushing, will help maintain a bacteria free
environment in the system.
According to Joyce Hubbard, Water Services Superintendent, this brief disinfectant adjustment is recommended by the
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as an extra measure to ensure the quality of drinking water.
“The City of Huntsville utilizes a combination of surface water and groundwater to meet the needs of citizens, and under
normal circumstances, chloramine disinfection – a mixture of chlorine and ammonia – is used to treat the water,”
Hubbard said. “During this time period, the City will be using free chlorine, a slightly stronger disinfectant than
chloramines, which can be used to remove any nitrification that may be occurring in the distribution system. This change
will be accomplished by turning the ammonia off at the plant and utilizing chlorine only.”
While free chlorine is being employed, Hubbard said some water customers may notice a slight change in the taste or
smell of their tap water, as well as slight discoloration.
“During this disinfection process, the safety of the water will not be affected,” Hubbard said. “At no point between now
and October 22 will the City’s water be unsafe to drink, shower with, or utilize around the home.
“We encourage our residents to contact us with any questions or concerns related to this matter.”
