WHEREAS Hattye Owens was born in Dodge, Texas, and relocated to Huntsville as a
child; and
WHEREAS Hattye's love of science led her to Prairie View &M University, where she
earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in Biology; and
WHEREAS Hattye taught school for over thirty -five years, beginning prior to
desegregation, educating and encouraging students to excel in science and
scientific professions; and
WHEREAS Hattye continued to serve her community as a volunteer on the City of
Huntsville Arts Commission from 1994-2o1o; and
WHEREAS on January 21, 2011, Hattye Owens will celebrate her 8orh birthday, and
hopes to receive birthday cards from as many of her former students as
possible, to commemorate this very special occasion.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBYPROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

be declared: "Hattye Owens Day"
in the City of Huntsville, and encourage all citizens join in celebrating the accomplishments ofMrs. Hattye
Owens, and the knowledge and joy she has brought to so many.
