RESO 2004-12 - Apply for tobacco compliance grant w/Texas STEPRESOLUTION NO. 2004-12 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS, APPROVING SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATION FOR A TOBACCO COMPLIANCE GRANT; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ACT AS THE CITY'S EXECUTIVE OFFICER AND AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE IN ALL MATTERS PERTAINING TO THE CITY'S PARTICIPATION IN THE TOBACCO COMPLIANCE GRANT. WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville, Texas recognizes that each year, minors in Texas illegally purchase more than 62 million packs of cigarettes and that almost 57,000 minors in Texas become daily smokers; and WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville, Texas recognizes that the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products to minors under 18 years of age is illegal; and WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville, Texas strives to prevent its youth from becoming addicted to cigarettes and other tobacco products that greatly reduce their quality of life; and WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville, Texas is dedicated to providing sufficient law enforcement resources to enforce State laws pertaining to the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products to minors and to providing educational opportunities regarding illegal tobacco use among minors; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS: 1. That the City Council of the City of Huntsville, Texas approves submission of the application for a Tobacco Compliance grant to join forces with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts' office and Texas STEP (Statewide Tobacco Education and Prevention) in fighting youth addiction to tobacco in the City of Huntsville, Texas. 2. That the City Council of the City of Huntsville, Texas authorizes the City Manager to act as the City's executive officer and authorized representative in all matters pertaining to the City's participation in the Tobacco Compliance Grant.
