RESO 2009-28 - Rename airport as Bruce Brothers Huntsville Regional Airport City of Huntsville, Texas Resolution No. 2009-28 RESOLUTION TO RENAME THE HUNTSVILLE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT TO THE BRUCE BROTHERS HUNTSVILLE REGIONAL AIRPORT THE STATE OF TEXAS § COUNTY OF WALKER § WHEREAS; The City of Huntsville owns the Huntsville Municipal Airport; WHEREAS; Reeves Murphree Bruce and Harry Joe Bruce were brothers and citizens of the City of Huntsville; WHEREAS; Both Reeves Murphree Bruce and Harry Joe Bruce learned to fly before the war while living in Huntsville, Texas; WHEREAS; Reeves Murphree Bruce became a pilot and Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Force during World War Two. He was assigned to fly C-47 Dakota transports and was killed in action while defending his country during a mission on January 2, 1944 in New Guinea; WHEREAS; Harry Joe Bruce became a pilot and Captain in the Army Air Force during World Two flying the combat C-47 . He was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters for previous missions in Normandy and Bastogne. He was killed in action while defending his country during a mission in Germany on April 24, 1945; WHEREAS; the City Council has determined that the gallantry and sacrifice of men and women such as the Bruce Brothers who served and men and women who have and are serving in the Armed Forces should be recognized and honored and that the renaming of the Huntsville Municipal Airport to the Bruce Brothers Huntsville Regional Airport accomplishes that purpose; and WHEREAS, City Council approved the renaming of the Huntsville Municipal Airport to the Bruce Brothers Huntsville Regional Airport by motion and vote on July 21, 2009. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE,TEXAS AS FOLLOWS: 1. The Huntsville Municipal Airport is now to be named and called the Bruce Brothers Huntsville Regional Airport. 2. City Staff is directed to take all necessary action to change the name on current signs and documents, brochures and other written materials and any future contracts and/or other documents to be executed and to notify the appropriate State and Federal agencies of the name change.
