TREE SALE
For over 18 years, the Walker County Proud Communities (WCPC) organization,
consisting of members from Walker County, City of Huntsville Solid Waste and Recycling,
Texas Forest Service, Master Gardeners, and local businesses, have sponsored an
annual Tree Sale. 2,000 to 3,000 seedling trees are donated every year by the Texas
Forest Service and sold for a $1.00 donation.
This event will be held at the Walker County Storm Shelter. Master Gardeners provide
expert information on the seedlings from planting to watering. Walker County
Commissioners provide the bagged mulch which is sold for a $1.00 donation or one free
bag with five trees purchased. This year's event will be held on Saturday, February 7,
2015 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The purpose of the Tree Sale is to promote green space and cleaner air.
TRASH BASH
Walker County Proud Communities (WCPC) organization, consisting of members from
Walker County, City of Huntsville Solid Waste and Recycling, Texas Forest Service,
Master Gardeners, and local businesses, is sponsoring the 20th Annual Trash Bash on
Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 8 a.m. to noon. Annually over 400 vehicles come through
the three drop-off sites, including the City of Huntsville Disposal and Recycling Facility,
Walker County Precinct Barn 3, and Walker County Precinct Barn 4, with over 150 tons of
garbage, tires, and metal (brush is composted and not disposed of).

The drop-off sites do not accept farm implement tires, concrete, bricks, burn barrels,
liquids of any type, vehicle batteries, or junk vehicles. Over 100 volunteers from the
Walker County Sheriff's Office, Walker County Community Supervision and Corrections,
Master Gardeners, Walker County Environmental Enforcement, Walker County
Commissioners, Try 2 Recycle, Waste Management of Houston, and the City of Huntsville
Disposal and Recycling staff assist during this multi-site event.
The purpose for Trash Bash is to provide citizens an opportunity to dispose of materials at
no cost and to prevent illegal dump sites.
ELECTRONICS RECYCLING AND HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
DAY
The City of Huntsville Solid Waste and Recycling Services is hosting the 8th Annual
Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, April 11 , 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the
City's Disposal and Recycling Facility. Technocycle of Houston has graciously sponsored
the last five events and provided the staff, trucks, and packing supplies to haul the
electronics. Recycling events could cost from $4,000 to $10,000 without Technocyle's
continued support.
Volunteers from the Walker County Sheriff's Office, Walker County Community
Supervision and Corrections, Master Gardeners, Try 2 Recycle, and the City of Huntsville
Disposal and Recycling staff assist during this single day event. Items accepted include
laptops, notebooks, printers, scanners, copiers, projectors, plasma/LCD/LED screens,
computer accessories, stereos, radios, cellphones, pagers, cameras, palm pilots, PDAs,
rechargeable batteries, and vehicle batteries. After the event, Technocycle provides a
report with the number of pallets and weights of materials collected and recycled. Try 2
Recycle provides a report of the number of vehicle batteries collected and recycled. In
2014, 162 vehicles dropped off electronics totaling 9.38 tons collected by the end of the
event.
The purpose for Electronics Recycling is to divert recyclable electronics from the waste
stream and avoid placing items in landfills which can be recycled and remanufactured into
other products.
This year's event is being expanded to include Household Hazardous Waste Disposal,
thanks to a grant from the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and a generous
donation from Walker County Proud Communities. Items accepted include aerosol
containers, alkaline batteries, corrosives, flammables, florescent bulbs, oxidizers, latex
and oil paint, solid and liquid poisons, propane, and reactives. "These materials are often
