18-tourism week PROCLAMATION NO. 2009-18 WHEREAS, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism Division has announced that Texas Tourism Week will be celebrated throughout the state, May 9-17, 2009; and WHEREAS, Locally the tourism industry is a collaboration of existing business, attractions, events, government and citizens and is spearheaded by the Convention & Visitors Bureau at the Huntsville Walker County Chamber of Commerce. The CVB operates with the Hotel/Motel Occupancy tax collected from visitors. The hotel industry in Huntsville has seen an increase in annual revenues and occupancy; and WHEREAS, The Governor’s office of Economic Development and Tourism recently released valuable information that shows the travel industry’s impact on Walker County accounts for $90 million in travel expenditures, up 7% over last year’s impact of $83.5 million ; and WHEREAS, Out of 254 counties, Walker County ranks in the top 20% of Texas counties based on travel spending; The state of Texas as a whole saw a 6.2% increase in the last year; and WHEREAS, The travel impact in Walker County also indicates $16.8 million in payroll earnings and accounts for 1,140 jobs; and WHEREAS, Travel spending in Walker County has increased by 79% in the last decade; and WHEREAS, Local tax receipts from travel amount to $964,400, up 43% since 1997, and state tax receipts from travel amount to $5,660,000, up 43% since 1997. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: MAY 11 – 15, 2009 be declared: Tourism Week in the City of Huntsville.
