Proc. 2009-04 Morris V. Johnson Day 2-19-09 PROCLAMATION 2009-04 WHEREAS Morris V. Johnson has served our community as an outstanding educator for 39 years, beginning his career in education in 1963 when he accepted a coaching position with Huntsville Independent School District; and WHEREAS During his tenure with HISD he taught Science and Math, and coached Football and Basketball; serving as a Cooperative Laboratory Teacher for Sam Houston State University and HISD from 1976-1980; and serving as principal of Samuel W. Houston Elementary from 1986 – 2002; and WHEREAS Mr. Johnson’s tireless dedication to education and to the community has made him a well-respected and well-liked educator, with many children in our community who will always remember Mr. Johnson and his role in making a difference in their life; and WHEREAS Throughout his career as well as in retirement, Mr. Johnson has rendered countless hours of volunteer service and has touched the lives of many; and WHEREAS Mr. Johnson has continued to serve our community through involvement with various community organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Walker County Housing Authority, Tri-County MHMR, Walker County Heritage Foundation, Huntsville’s Promise, Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce and Huntsville Memorial Hospital Board, to name a few; and WHEREAS Morris V. Johnson is truly a role model and an outstanding, respected community leader, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that February 19, 2009 be designated as: “Morris V. Johnson Day” in Huntsville, Texas, in recognition of Mr. Johnson’s tireless dedication and service to educating our children and serving our community.
