WHEREAS Sam Houston State University began as the first teacher- training institution west of the
Mississippi, with its establishment on April 21, 1879 as Sam Houston Normal Institute,
having its first classes on October 1o, 1879; and
WHEREAS in 1918, the curriculum was expanded to four years and in 1923 it became known as Sam
Houston State Teacher's College, Sam Houston State College in 1965, and finally as Sam
Houston State University in 1969; and
WHEREAS Sam Houston State University has achieved state, regional and national accreditation and
offers an academic program which provides 79 undergraduate degrees, 54 graduate
degrees and five doctoral programs. Sam Houston is also a member of the Texas State
University System and is accredited by more than 20 national and state agencies; and
WHEREAS Sam Houston State University has experienced a strong and healthy growth over the last
130 years, from a recorded log students in 1881 to its current population of more than
16,66o students from over 53 countries; and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville recognized the prosperity which has come to the community because
of Sam Houston State University and realizes the fine quality of this growth; and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville wishes to join in with those at Sam Houston State University to
celebrate the occasion of its 130th year and to offer its continued support of the university
community;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBYPROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

be declared: "Sam Houston State University Day"
in the City of Huntsville and call upon our citizens to join in the 13oth Anniversary
Celebration and recognize the accomplishments and progress attained by Sam
Houston State University over its 130 years.
