PROCLAMATION NO.
2015-36
WHEREAS, Texas steps forward to take a stand against rape; and
WHEREAS, International Denim Day has been observed since April 1998 as a
symbol of protest in response to an Italian Supreme Court decision to
overturn a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. This
event is to encourage individuals to wear jeans in order to raise
awareness of rape and sexual assault; and
WHEREAS Texas is dedicated to support the Denim Day initiative as there is no
excuse and never an invitation to rape. There are sexual assault
prevention and education efforts underway throughout Texas and the
nation to challenge the societal myths and behaviors that perpetuate
rape and to engage communities in a common goal of ending sexual
assault.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in
me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
April 29, 2015
be declared:
Denim Day
in the City of Huntsville, and I encourage all citizens to wear jeans in support of
Denim Day to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault.
