PROCLAMATION
No. 2014-51

WHEREAS on Monday, the 16 of September, 1844, a meeting was held in the
schoolhouse in the town of Huntsville, Montgomery County, Republic of
Texas, for the purpose of organizing a Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church was both one of the first churches in Texas and in
Huntsville, as well as being one of the first to offer Sunday School classes;
and
WHEREAS additionally, the First Baptist Church was the first to provide a Vacation
Bible School for the children of Huntsville; and
WHEREAS the First Baptist Church has been a leader in ministries to the Texas
Department of Criminal Justice and to the Sam Houston State University
faculty and students, and helped to organize the first Hispanic Baptist
church in Huntsville.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in
me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that
September 16, 2014
be designated as: First Baptist Church Day

in Huntsville, Texas, and urge all citizens to celebrate the 170 anniversary of this
special part of our community.
