PROCLAMATION
NO. 2015-11
WHEREAS the renowned statesman General Sam Houston was the first and third President of
the Republic of Texas; and
WHEREAS the Sam Houston Statue - completed in his honor in 1994 – established Huntsville’s
notoriety as “The Home of Sam Houston;” and
WHEREAS in May 2013, the Sam Houston Statue Visitors Center and Gift Shop boasted the
achievement of having 1,000,000 visitors sign its official guest book; and
WHEREAS to date, over 1,094,000 visitors from 124 countries have visited the monument; and
WHEREAS the Sam Houston Statue has served as the site of wedding ceremonies, a military
officer commission, community receptions and countless individual photos ; and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville is deeply proud of the legacy of honor left behind by Sam
Houston himself.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in
me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
October 25, 2014
be declared: Sam Houston Statue Day
in the City of Huntsville and call upon our citizens to join in the celebration of the memory
of this special individual and his service to our community and nation.
