ORD CC 03/10/1970 - Avenue L to Sam Houston AvenueAN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE NAME OF AVENUE L, AS SHOWN ON THE PRESENT PLAT OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE AND BY COMMON USAGE TO SAM HOUSTON AVENUE: BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS: WHEREAS, a portbn of Avenue L has abutting it a portion of the campus of Sam Houston State University and The Sam Houston Park and Museum; and WHEREAS, the name of General Sam Houston, former resident of the City of Huntsville, President of the Republic of Texas, and Governor of the State of Texas, and whose last resting place is in this City, has an unusual historical connection with this City; and WHEREAS, Sam Houston State University has for its duration contributed tremendously toward the social, cultural and economical development of the community; and WHEREAS, it is to the public interest that the name of Sam Houston and Sam Houston State University be memorialized by having a Street in the City bearing the name of Sam Houston Avenue: THEREFORE, the name of Avenue L from its intersection with Avenue K Southerly through the City of Huntsville is hereby changed and shall hereafter be known and designated as Sam Houston Avenue. PASSED by unanimous vote of the City Council and approved this 10th day of March, 1970. WHEREAS, the Owners of a majority of the property abutting Normal Park Road from 22nd Street to Eastham Lane, hereinafter referred to as Unit A and the Owners of a majority of the pro - between Highway 75 South perty abutting Lake Road /and the feeder road of Interstate Highway 45, hereinafter referred to as Unit B, in the City of Huntsville, Texas, request the City to improve the portions of said street in the following manner: UNIT A: Normal Park Road from 22nd Street to Eastham Lane to be paved 36 ft. in width with concrete curb and gutter, 11/2" asphalt surface with 41/2" asphalt base coarse. UNIT B: Lake Road between Highway 75 South and the feeder Road of Interstate Highway 45 to be paved 40 ft in width with concrete curb and gutter, 11/2" asphalt surface with adequate base coarse (asphal- tic, crushed stone, or iron ore gravel, depending on best bid). The City Council having determined that said improvement should be made: THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS: That a necessity exists for the paving and improving of said portions of Normal Park Road, as follows: UNIT A: Normal Park Road from 22nd Street to Eastham Lane to be paved 36 ft. in with with concrete curb and gutter, 11/2" asphalt surface with 41" asphalt base coarse. UNIT B: Lake Road between Highway 75 South and the feeder 3oad of Interstate Highway 45 to be paved 40 ft. in width with concrete curb and gutter, 11/2" asphalt surface with adequate base coarse (asphal- tic, crushed stone, or iron ore gravel, depending on best bid). That N.B. Davidson, City Engineer, prepare and file with the City Council plans and specification for such work and prelimi- nary estimates of the costs therefore. Be it further ordained that the Mayor of the City of Hunts- ville, Texas, be, and he is hereby authorized, to enter into Mechanic's, Materialman's and Paving Lien contracts with the abutting property Owners in accordance with this ordinance and in accordance with ordinances hereafter to be enacted for such paving and improvement of said portions of said streets. On motion duly made and seconded the above and foregoing ordinance was duly adopted by the unanimous vote of the City Council of the City of Huntsville, Texas, at its regular meeting on the 10th day of February, 1970, and approved.
