PROCLAMATION
NO. 2013-18
WHEREAS the Peace Corps was established by President Kennedy’s executive
order on March 1, 1961, with the mission to promote world peace and
friendship and a better understanding between Americans and people
of other countries; and
WHEREAS more than 210,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers
in 139 countries, including 23 men and women from Huntsville; and
WHEREAS Peace Corps volunteers have made significant and lasting
contributions around the world in agriculture, business development,
information technology, education, the environment, health and
HIV/AIDS, and have improved the lives of individuals and
communities worldwide; and
WHEREAS the Peace Corps has become an enduring symbol of the United States’
commitment to encourage progress, create opportunity, and expand
development at the grassroots level in the developing world.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me
as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
February 24-March 2, 2013
be declared:
“Peace Corps Week”
in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to support of the Peace Corps throughout
this week’s observation.
