Proc. 2016-36 - National Tourism Week PROCLAMATION NO. 2016-36 WHEREAS travel to and within the United States provides significant benefits for the nation, and contributes to personal growth, education, cultural understanding and enhancement of America’s image around the world; and WHEREAS travel supports more than 8 million jobs directly in the industry as well as being a top ten employer in 49 of the 50 states, supporting 601,000 jobs in Texas and 1,110 jobs in Walker County; and WHEREAS in 2013, travelers’ spending directly generated tax revenues of $67.5 billion for the state of Texas, used to support essential services and programs; and WHEREAS direct travel impact for visitor spending in Huntsville/Walker County was $105,040,000; local tax receipts equal $1,340,000; WHEREAS leisure travel, which accounts for more than three-quarters of all trips taken in the United States as well as in Huntsville and Walker County, spurs countless benefits to travelers’ creativity, cultural awareness, education, happiness, productivity, relationships, and wellness. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: May 1-7, 2016 be declared: NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to join in this special observance by enjoying all the special events and sites that draw others to visit our community.
