PROCLAMATION
NO. 2016-25
WHEREAS Sam Houston was born in Rock Bridge County, Virginia in 1793, but was raised in Tennessee from 1806, eventually serving Tennessee in its State Militia, holding two terms on its
behalf in the U. S. Congress, and as its governor from 1827; and
WHEREAS in the 1830s, Houston relocated to Texas, serving as commander-in-chief of the Texas Army, completing two terms as President of the Republic of Texas, serving 13 years as a U.S.
Senator from Texas, and then being elected as its governor in 1859; and
WHEREAS although Sam Houston’s adventures and passions took him to live among his loyal friends in the Cherokee Nation and the country’s call for his statesmanship made it necessary
for him to be in the nation’s capital for many years, clearly two cities symbolize the forces that shaped the courage, honor, and legacy of this true patriot; and
WHEREAS today we gather to celebrate the life of Sam Houston, from its foundation in Maryville, Tennessee, through its culmination in Huntsville, Texas, as both are necessary to fully
appreciate Sam Houston, an American Hero.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in Tom Taylor, as Mayor of the City of Maryville, Tennessee, and Andy Brauninger, as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas,
that:
March 19, 2016
be declared: Sister Cities Day
in the Cities of Maryville, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Texas, and encourage all citizens to celebrate this connection and honor the man whose life brings these communities together.
