Proc. 2017-44 - Huntsville Public Library 50th Anniversary, 9-17 PROCLAMATION NO. 2017-44 WHEREAS on Monday, September 25, 1967, after two years of hard work and determination, the Huntsville Public Library officially and fully opened its doors to the public, where for fifty years its founders, benefactors, volunteers, and staff have generously given their time, energies, and talents to the library’s patrons; and WHEREAS in that time, the Huntsville Public Library has circulated millions of books, magazines, recordings, and printed materials, and has cumulatively had thousands of attendees at its programs, thereby enriching the lives of the citizens of Huntsville and Walker County; and WHEREAS in 2012, the Library celebrated the opening of the current facility, more than three times the size of the original, including a community room for meetings and programs, a teen space, a large and separate children’s room, a computer lab, a café, large study rooms, and a renovated drive-through; and WHEREAS it is with sincere gratitude we acknowledge the long hours, donations, and participation of the community, volunteers, the City of Huntsville Public Library Board, the Huntsville Public Library Friends, Inc., prior and current City Council members, and the City staff who have worked together to provide our residents with this special place of enrichment, education, and simple pleasure. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: September 24, 2017 be declared: Huntsville Public Library Day in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to celebrate the Library’s 50th anniversary and let it inspire them to further their lifelong learning and enjoyment of all it has to offer.
