Proc. 2017-29 - Sexual Assault Awareness Month - 4-4-17 PROCLAMATION NO. 2017-29 WHEREAS one in four college women report surviving rape or attempted rape at some point between 18-24 years of age, and every year over 97,000 men and 683,000 women, not including children, experience rape; and WHEREAS it should be noted that the presence of a bystander makes a completed rape 44% less likely to occur; and WHEREAS during the month of April, Sam Houston State University, including numerous departments, student organizations, law enforcement, Walker County, the City of Huntsville, and our community are working to expand awareness and prevention of sexual assault locally; and WHEREAS all community members can help by supporting a number of events including the April 11th documentary film and panel discussion, Denim Day on April 26th, and the Ignite the Night Rally and March on April 27th, among others. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: April 2017 be declared: Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the City of Huntsville, and encourage residents to recognize the need to bring increased awareness and education to this issue.
