Proc. 2017-24 - Augusta Baker Day (90th birthday) - 3-11-17 PROCLAMATION NO. 2017-24 WHEREAS Mrs. Augusta Baker was born March 8, 1927, in Victoria, Texas and later moved to Houston, where she graduated from Jack Yates High School in 1944; and WHEREAS she married Mr. Wendell H. Baker, Sr. in 1945 and moved to Huntsville in 1949 where they worked together as community activists. They worked extremely hard to help establish equality and fairness for all persons in our community. Mrs. Baker was a voice of wisdom and courage beside Mr. Baker during the difficult days of the civil rights movement; and WHEREAS Augusta has been a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of over 60 years, where she served as the financial secretary for 22 years. She is currently a member of the Senior Missionary Society and the Brackens Fellowship. Mrs. Baker is the mother of five children, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS Mrs. Augusta Baker is an unsung heroine whose selfless community service is a shining example of faith and courage in the service of her religion and as a true servant to her fellow human beings. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: March 11, 2017 be declared: Augusta Baker Day in the City of Huntsville, and urge all residents to join in honoring this special citizen and her significant life to date.
