Proc. 2017-12 - CrimeStoppers - 1-17 PROCLAMATION NO. 2017-12 WHEREAS crime is a scourge on our society that tears apart lives and breeds feelings of fear, anger, and helplessness, and it is the obligation of all to do everything possible to ensure that our communities are not victimized by criminals; and WHEREAS since its beginning in 1976, Crime Stoppers programs have empowered Texans to take a stand against crime by bringing together businesses, citizens, law enforcement, and the media to combat crime and make our communities safer; and WHEREAS combining media awareness, monetary rewards, and anonymity for tipsters, Crime Stoppers has created an effective method for solving crime and helping citizens take back control over their neighborhoods; and WHEREAS Crime Stoppers has been particularly effective in Texas, where anonymous tips have led to over 182,000 arrests and $3.5 billion in property recovered and narcotics seized since the inception of the program; and WHEREAS in 2016, the Walker County/Huntsville Crime Stoppers paid rewards of $4,600, resulting in $20,600 worth of property returned. Since the beginning of the program, it has paid rewards of over $83,000, with over $878,000 in property returned. Walker County/Huntsville Crime Stoppers is also proud to work with the Huntsville High School Crime Stoppers Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: January 2017 be declared: “Crime Stoppers Month” in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to recognize that they are able to assist in, and responsible for, stopping crime.
