Proc. 2017-07 - Fire Prevention Week - 10-9 to 15-16 PROCLAMATION No. 2017-07 WHEREAS the City of Huntsville is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our City; and WHEREAS fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk to fire, as nearly 3,000 people die annually in home fires; and WHEREAS working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a reported fire in half and the National Fire Protection Association recommends at least one smoke alarm in every level of the home outside all sleeping areas, and in all bedrooms; and WHEREAS the City of Huntsville Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire deaths and injuries through prevention and proper education; and   WHEREAS City of Huntsville residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal responsibility to increase their safety from fire, especially in the home; and WHEREAS the Fire Prevention Week 2016 theme, “Don’t Wait-Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every Ten Years” effectively serves to educate the public about the vital importance of replacing the smoke alarms in their homes. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, that October 9-15, 2016 be designated as: FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in Huntsville, Texas, and call upon our citizens to protect their homes and families by heeding the potentially life-saving messages of Fire Prevention Week, and to support the efforts of the City’s fire and emergency services.
