Proc. 2019-27 - Sen. William Dean day, 4-19 PROCLAMATION No. 2019-27 WHEREAS the late Texas Senator William Luther Dean was a prominent lawyer and political figure in Texas, serving in the 25th legislative session of the Texas House of Representatives before being elected to the Texas Senate in 1916 and representing Walker County; and WHEREAS he was born in Madison County and practiced law in Huntsville until his death in 1933; and WHEREAS Dean chaired a rules and procedure committee for the trial of Gov. James B. Ferguson and presided over the Governor’s impeachment, as President Pro Tempore; and WHEREAS he lobbied for the Dean Law to prohibit the production and sale of liquors in Texas, that was later ratified in 1919; and WHEREAS Dean lays in rest at Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville reminding all of his legacy as a prominent lawyer and political figure in Texas. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas, that: April 13th, 2019 be declared: WILLIAM LUTHER DEAN DAY in Huntsville, Texas, and encourage citizens to honor the historical footprint of the many that have blazed a trail for political leaders.
