Huntsville and Walker County are currently under
a strict burn ban due to lack of rainfall and
extreme temperatures. Walker County Judge
Danny Pierce and the Walker County
Commissioner's Court approved the burn ban for
Walker County to be effective at noon July 18,
2016.
"The burn ban will typically last 45 days," said City
Fire Chief Tom Grisham, "unless we have a
significant amount of rainfall during that time, then
the appropriate parties can make a decision about
lifting the ban."
The Huntsville Fire Department is working with the
Texas Forest Service to monitor the area's
Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which is an
index used to determine forest fire potential. The
drought index is based on a daily water balance,
where a drought factor is balanced with
precipitation and soil moisture. The City is
averaging an index of 595 which is why the burn
ban was put into place.
The Huntsville Fire Department does not issue
any burn permits during this time and residents
within the city limits who do not comply with the
burn ban a citation may be issued.
