On Tuesday, June 2, the City of Huntsville Health Division received a complaint via the City's online Report It!
system, concerning a Facebook post about a banana shake containing parasites, purchased from the Sonic on
11th Street in Huntsville, Texas. On Tuesday afternoon, health inspectors visited the location and performed a
thorough investigation of the ice cream and shake machines. Both of the machines were completely
disassembled, cleaned, and sanitized in the presence of the inspectors. No traces of parasites, worms, or
tapeworms were found. In addition, the inspectors, with the assistance of Sonic management, reached out to the
food distributor that supplies the bananas to the local store to determine if there had been any recalls or concerns
with the bananas and found there had been none.
Upon completion of their investigation, the inspectors found no threats to public health or safety and allowed the
restaurant to remain open. Health Inspector Deven Merchant noted the importance the Division places on
investigating all such incidents.
"The health and safety of our citizens is of upmost importance," said Merchant. "We take such reports very
seriously."
The inspectors contacted the individual who made the Facebook post for additional background and to take
possession of the possible parasites for testing and further examination. The complainant indicated the alleged
parasites had already been thrown away.
