A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS,
AUTHORIZING THE APPROPRIATE REPRESENTATIVE TO EXECUTE AGREEMENTS
ASSOCIATED WITH THE "URBAN FORESTRY PARTNERSHIP GRANT PROGRAM"
GRANT AWARD; COMMITTING SHARED COST OF THE PROJECT AS DESCRIBED IN
THE GRANT APPLICATION;
WHEREAS, The 101ST congress of the United States, in developing the Forestry Title of the 1990 Farm
Bill, found that the health of forests in urban areas and communities is on the decline; these forests, trees,
and open spaces improve the quality of life for residents, enhance economic value of property and are
more effective than rural trees at reducing the buildup of carbon dioxide due to the added energy savings
for urban residents; and
WHEREAS, Congress defined the purposes of this program to include improving the understanding of
the benefits of preserving existing tree cover; encourage property owners to maintain trees and expand
forest cover; provide educational and technical assistance to local organizations in maintaining and
expanding forest cover; provide competitive matching grants to local units of government and other
approved organizations for urban forestry projects to illustrate the benefits of forest cover; and enhance
technical skills of individuals involved in establishing or maintaining urban forests; and
WHEREAS, The City of Huntsville is partnering in this program and will successfully submit a grant
application in the amount of $10,000;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS, that:
SECTION 1. The City Council hereby authorizes the City Manager to execute all agreements
associated with the "Urban Forestry Partnership Program" Grant with the Texas Forest
Service.
SECTION 2. The City Council commits to providing its share of the project costs through the cash and
"in- kind" matches in an amount not to exceed $65,291 for the Urban Forester position.
SECTION 3. The City Council endorses and permits the planting of trees on public property under
their jurisdiction in the City of Huntsville.
