and Rainy days are over! After canceling two shows this month, the Huntsville Music Festival will be back in action for
one final night. Featuring four bands, a delicious Cajun food truck from Houston, free door prizes, and the raffle
updates drawing all have been waiting for. The concert will run from 4-10 p.m. on Thursday,April 30 at Rather Park.
Colton Houston, Main Street Intern, notes "there's a great amount of anticipation for the music festival's grand fina-
le, we hope to have the biggest crowd to date. A New Orleans jazz band, one of the four bands scheduled, will be
performing. I am honored to have them come to town and share their culture with us." (See page 5 for more infor-
mation.)
General Sam Houston Folk Festival
0 son= Step back in time to enjoy a variety of historical and cultural experiences this weekend. The Sam Houston Memori-
al Museum's fifteen-acre grounds will be transformed from a peaceful setting into a bustling frontier settlement
where you can watch re-enactments, listen to music, and shop for crafts, or simply stroll the setting where Sam and
Margaret Houston lived and their children played. Supported in part by funding from the City of Huntsville. May 1-

Airing of the Quilts
Start this Saturday morning off by celebrating the 12th Bi-Annual "Airing of the Quilts" in Huntsville's Historic Down-
town Square. Carrying on an old tradition of springtime quilt airing,this event is hosted by the Tall Pines Quilt Guild,
and will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Supported in part by funding from the City of Huntsville. New
this year is transportation between the Airing and the Folk Festival that will run throughout the day.
Cinco de Mayo
After viewing the quilts, head on over to the Walker County Annex parking lot for a festive Cinco de Mayo Celebra-
tion. Featuring live performances by the Sam Houston State University Ballet Folklorico dancers,traditional arts and
crafts, games, and many more family fun events. Supported in part by funding from the City of Huntsville. Held
from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. (See the last page of this issue for details.)
Movie in the Park
Join Recreation Services at Kate Barr Ross Park (State Highway 75 North) on Saturday, May 2, at 8:00 p.m. (or
dark), for an outdoor movie! Invite the whole family to watch Big Hero 6. Bring blankets or chairs for seating -
snacks will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis, prices vary. No alcohol or glass bottles will be allowed in
the park.
"There is no better way to welcome the warm weather with a cool night's breeze than to watch a movie under the
stars at Kate Barr Ross Park with your family and friends, said Natalie Reid, in the City's Recreation Services Divi-

On April 15, 2015, the City of Huntsville proclaimed
ationa r National Library Week - encouraging all citizens to
y take advantage of the opportunities that libraries
offer.
ee As stated in the proclamation, libraries create po-
tential and possibility within the community, effect
social change through their commitment to provide
equitable access to information for all library users,
and open up a world of new resources for individu-
als throughout.
National Library Week supports more than the re-
sources made available for use, it also supports li-
brarians and patrons of the public libraries within
the community. Councilmember Tish Humphrey had
the honor of not only presenting the proclamation,
but also reading a short story to the children of
Huntsville.
"Being a part of National Library Week was beyond
inspiring," said Humphrey. "We have an amazing
library here in Huntsville and it's great to see that
so many young children and adults are utilizing their

Job description: To implement a variety of classes and
activities for the Wynne Home Art Center for which she
must promote to the public, create a timeline/class sched-
ule, and monitor the operations. Gabel must also become
familiar with the responsibilities and duties of the organi-
zation; take the lead for one special event; develop pro-
motional deliverables for all art classes, and complete a
d report on the internship.
Unique contribution to City of Huntsville: "Working with
the city has opened my eyes. I've gained skills in time
management and taking the initiative to get things done. I
have learned more about the City budget and how the City
works overall. With Huntsville being such a small town, it
gives you a better opportunity to get involved and feel im-
portant. I love Huntsville and all that it has to offer!"
Intern Constance Gabel with Certifications/Memberships/Activities: Constance is Vice
Wynne Home Coordinator Linda Pease President of Marketing in a Sam Houston State University
funded organization, The Center for Law, Engagement and
Politics (LEAP), and has been involved for almost two

social media/blogs; as well as publicizing those events to
SHSU.

Wynne Home Arts Center the fine arts, history, civil rights, literature and, in particu-
lar, law, engagement, and politics. Its mission is to enrich

On April 9th, the City of Huntsville and the Boys & Girls
Club of Walker County (BGCWC) held a groundbreaking
ceremony dedicated to a new Tornado Safe Room.
"The Tornado Safe room will be used to keep citizens �
safe in a severe weather event. When not in use for
safety purposes, the Boys and Girls Club will have ac-
cess to the building," stated Dr. Sherry McKibben, City u
of Huntsville Neighborhood Resources Director, who ,
has worked extensively on the project.
Grants from the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) and local fund raising has gotten the
facility on track, but help is still needed and the BGCWC
is accepting donations. Construction of the 12,076
sq. ft. building is set to begin around July and be com-
pleted within twelve months of the start date.

On April 11, 2015, the City of Huntsville Solid Waste and Recy-
cling Services Division hosted the 8th Annual Electron-
ics Recycling Day and the first Household Hazardous Waste Day.
The event allowed individuals to bring salvaged ed electronics and
hazardous materials for recycling.
With the help of many volunteers, over 340 vehicles dropped off
electronics and household hazardous waste items totaling
15,977 pounds.
Esther Herlotz, Superintendent of Solid Waste and Recycling, ex-
tended special thanks to volunteers from the Walker County Mas-
ter Gardeners Association, Try 2 Recycle, and the Walker County
Jail's Community Supervision and Corrections Department, who

assisted with traffic control, vehicle counts, environmental
handouts, and unloading of vehicles.
