Explanation
An agenda item will be forthcoming in the next 4 -5
weeks for Council to authorize the City Manager to
apply for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP)
grant with TXDOT. The grant will provide funding in
the range of 90 % -95% of the construction costs for
alternative transportation projects the City develops.
City staff believes viable projects will cost somewhere
around $1.4M. Contemplated projects are sidewalks
(possibly dual purpose pedestrian and bicycle
sidewalks) that would service SHSU students living off
campus in higher student population living facilities
along Sam Houston Avenue S., Montgomery Road, and
Lake Road. The grant will require 30% of the design
for the sidewalks to be completed. This budget
amendment will provide necessary funds in the
amount of $50,000 for the 30% design work to be
contracted out with an engineering firm and be
performed in time for staff to submit the design work
with the grant application. The grant will require
surveys for rights -of -way where the sidewalks will be
installed. This budget amendment will provide
necessary funds in the amount of $50,000 for the
survey work to be contracted out and be performed in
time for staff to submit the surveys with the grant
application.
