Proc. 2011-37 Lucy Mae Willis Day 07-02-11PROCLAMATION No. 2011-37 WHEREAS Lucy Mae Mason Willis was born in Huntsville, Texas on January 26,1918, the first African American baby born to a serviceman from Walker County; and WHEREAS Lucy graduated with honors from Sam Houston High School in 1934 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Tillotson College in Austin, Texas in 1939; and WHEREAS Lucy was a successful and honored educator in Lovelady and later in Trinity IDS, where she worked on her Master of Science degree in Home Economics, served as a band instructor, and also taught typing; and WHEREAS Lucy and her husband were loving parents and grandparents to Dorothye La Rue Spivey, her husband Reverend Floyd Polk, Sr., their daughter and grandchildren; and WHEREAS all her life Lucy Mae Willis was active in her church homes - teaching, attending Bible study, and participating in church functions. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: be declared: July 2, 2011 Lucy Mae Willis Day in the City of Huntsville and call upon our citizens to join in the celebration of the life of this special member of our community.
