ORD 1997-29 - Change City Election Date - May 09-09-1997ORDINANCE NO. 97-29
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS, AMENDING CHANGING THE CITY'S GENERAL
MUNICIPAL ELECTION DATE FROM JANUARY TO MAY; AND
MAKING OTHER FINDINGS AND PROVISIONS RELATED THERETO.
WHEREAS the Texas Legislature adopted H.B. No. 298 (codified in part as Texas Election Code
41.001) which prohibits the City from holding a general election of officers in
January; and
WHEREAS the only available uniform election dates for the annual election of city officers are
the first Saturday in May and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November
and
WHEREAS the City Council desires to hold its election of city officers on the first Saturday in
May;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS, that:
SECTION 1: The City shall hold its general election for officers on the first Saturday in May
beginning in 1998.
SECTION 2: The City Secretary is directed to provide an administrative note to Section 6.01 of the
City charter that the Regular City general election shall be held on the first Saturday
in May in accordance with State law and this ordinance.
SECTION 3: This ordinance shall take effect immediately.
