ston State University, the SHSU Small Business Development Center and

ically Underutilized Business (HUB) Vendor Show.

Sponsoring entities provide 70 tables free-of-charge for vendors. Staff
from the sponsoring entities as well as from other state agencies, universi-
ties and surrounding local entities will visit with exhibitors throughout the
morning.
Vendors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with
local and state agencies to showcase their products and services.

a vendor training sessions to will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The
training sessions will provide detailed information on how to do business
with government entities.

Smith said. “Each level of government has slightly different bidding re-
quirements and this can be daunting to the vendors.
“During my presentation, I will be discussing bid compliance, bid submis-
sions and the bid process.”
Purchasers and end-users from the sponsoring entities will be on hand to
allow the HUB's to showcase their products and services. These individuals
include Sharon Schultz, HUB Director with the Texas Department of Crimi-
nal Justice; Robert Barragan, Director of the SHSU Small Business Devel-
opment Center; SHSU HUB Coordinator Bob Chapa; and Walker County

event, there will only be space for 70 vendors for this year's show, so be
sure to register early,” Smith said. Vendors from all across the state at-
tend each year therefore the tables fill quickly.

Utilizing funding from the Texas Department of Housing
and Community Affairs, the City of Huntsville has complet-
ed the remodeling and construction of 12 local homes, and
February 13 marked the closing of the first home.
The homes, provided as part of the TDHCA Neighborhood
Stabilization Program, are located throughout the Hunts-
ville area and seven remain available for purchase to low-
to moderate-income families.
“The Neighborhood Stabilization Program provides funding
for the remodeling and/or construction of homes which
become available for purchase to low- or moderate-income
families,” said Dr. Sherry McKibben, Community Develop-
ment Specialist. “We’re very excited to see a worthy family
able to purchase this home with assistance from the City
and the State.
“As an example, a family of four would qualify for the pro-
gram if their income were $62,050 or less. If you believe
your family could be eligible to purchase an NSP home,
contact Lindsey Owings at (936) 291-5459 to learn more.”

The Wynne Home Arts Center has several events coming
up in March for residents of all ages. Festival Inspiración
and Art Break – an Arts and Theater Camp – will be held
from March 4 to 16. Art Break, which will take place from
March 11 through 16, will feature events specifically for
children ages six to 14. The events will be held at the
Wynne Home Arts Center and Old Town Theater.
On Monday, March 4, volunteer and program coordinator
Tamara Chasteen will offer a marbling class for all ages,
where participants will marble paper for scrapbooking
and collage. Then, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., participants are
invited to participate in the exhibit opening, reception
and book signing with Chilean guest artist and childrens’
book illustrator Paula Vásquez. Vásquez will speak briefly
at 5:30 and sign a children’s book with her illustrations
throughout the evening.
On March 5, participants age 13 and above are invited to
collage with Vasquez. From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., she will work with students to cre-
ate a collage in her multi-media style. On Wednesday
evening, Ms. Vásques will participate in the University’s
symphony orchestra presentation of “Carnival of the Ani-
mals,” where her collages and those of local school chil-
dren will be featured. The reception is at 5:00 p.m. and
the performance is at 6:00 p.m. at the Gaertner Perform-
ing Arts Center on the SHSU campus.
“Like Water for Chocolate,” an award-winning film, will be
screened for adults only at the Wynne Home Arts Center
at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6.
Two classes will be offered from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on
Thursday, March 7 for participants ages 10 and above.
The first, led by Chasteen, will focus on piñata making
before the March 16 Latin Arts Market and Celebration.
The second, led by Vasquez, will focus on collaging.
Guests of all ages are welcome on March 8 for the Vaya
con Dios brunch, featuring an overview of collage work-
shops with Vasquez.
From March 11 to 16, a special event for children ages
six to 14 will also be offered – the Art Break Theater and
Arts Camp. During the event, guest artist and storyteller
Rick Brown will produce and direct two children’s musi-
cals. The performances will be held at the Latin Arts Mar-
ket and Celebration on March 16.
During the same time frame, participants will create pot-
tery and will have choices between dance, guitar and
book binding and collage for three different arts.
The final event of Festival Inspiración, the Latin Arts Mar-
ket and Celebration, will be held on Saturday, March 16

The Friends of the Wynne hosted another successful Empty
Bowls Soup Luncheon in February, resulting in over $1,000
for Meals on Wheels of Walker County.
According to Chasteen, the fourth annual fundraiser - which
was held on February 12 at the Wynne Home Arts Center -
was attended by over 60 guests.
“I couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout,”
Chasteen said. “There was no way to put on an event like
that without help of many, many people, and I had that, so it
was a great experience.”
