Residents may submit applications to the City Secretary at City Hall, or online at https://www.huntsvilletx.gov/egov/apps/action/center.egov? action=form&item=25&fDD=. The City anticipates the Mayor will make nominations in August. The City Charter sets that all nominations are made by the Mayor for consideration by the Council. This spring, the Council began requiring individuals interested in appointment or reappointment complete an application so that the Council has an opportunity to review it. According to Mayor Mac Woodward, serving on a City board or commis- sion is an exciting chance open to citizens of all ages and experience levels. “I think it’s very important for the City Council and the City of Huntsville to have citizens serve on advisory boards and commissions,” Wood- ward said. City boards and commissions are in place to address the major facets of the Huntsville community, including public works, housing, fine arts, recreational activities and athletics, and other areas. Residents are encouraged to include their areas of interest on participation applica- tions. Woodward said volunteers for boards or commissions may be of virtu- ally any age or experience level, so long as they have a willingness to serve. “Volunteers are needed from our community at all levels, from stu- dents to senior citizens,” he said. “The most important quality for serv- ing on a board is the sincere hope to improve the City for all our citi- zens.” Citizens needed to serve on City boards, commissions Just a reminder - According to City ordinance, it is not permitted to use, transport or purchase fireworks within the City limits. Violators will be charged with a Class C misdemeanor, which carries a fine not to exceed $500. Please keep this in mind while planning for the Fourth of July. While City Marshal Byron Bush is one of the only City employees who gets his job title printed on his vehicle, few know the full extent of what his position involves. Employed by the Huntsville Municipal Court and commissioned by the Huntsville Police Department, the City Mar- shal is a certified peace officer, responsible for a very specific group of tasks. “I am employed by the Huntsville Municipal Court to serve arrest warrants for the City, subpoenas and other sum- mons sent out by the court,” he said. “I am also the bailiff for the court, and in that capacity, my job is to keep order in the court and direct visitors and attendants where they need to be. I answer questions for them to get them through the process of the municipal court as easily as possible.” While his primary focus is serving the municipal court, Bush said his standing as a certified peace officer also gives him the authority to enforce the law in Huntsville and outside the city limits. “As a certified peace officer, I am duly commissioned by the State of Texas to enforce the law both in Walker County and outside of county limits,” he said. “Arrest warrants, for example, are good anywhere in the state, so I am permit- ted to serve those warrants in Walker County or outside county lines.” Bush said he also works to assist other first responder agencies, including the Huntsville Police Department and the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, as he can. “You could say I’m a police officer with a very specific purpose - I’m a one-man show where my duties are con- cerned,” he said. “I am a cop, but I don’t take calls and you won’t usually see me on scene at an accident. However, I do sometimes depend on other agencies for assistance, and in turn, I keep my ear to the radio and back them up whenever possible.” Bush earned a Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement from Sam Houston State University and a Master Peace Officer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Bush worked for the Walker County Sheriff’s Office for eight years as the Sergeant in charge of Crimi- nal Investigations and Narcotics. During that time, he also supervised the Walker County Narcotics Taskforce, comprised of officers from six agen- cies. He also retired from the Texas Alcoholic Bev- erage Commission with the rank of Captain. “Law enforcement is all I’ve ever really done,” he said. “I’m also an EMT and a certified firefighter, but those are my hobbies. Retirement hasn’t really crossed my mind, either. I do better when I’m ac- tive, and I really have a great job.” According to Municipal Court Clerk and Administra- tor Susan McGilberry, Bush’s contributions to the court help to ensure the efficient completion of court tasks. “Byron brings a great deal of knowledge and experi- ence with him to the court,” she said. “He is a defi- nite asset to the entire City organization and we are very fortunate to have him as our City Marshal.” City Marshal Byron Bush oversees proceedings in the Huntsville Municipal Court. - photo by Kristin Edwards City Marshal assists Municipal Court, local law enforcement agencies Need to reach the Need to reach the Need to reach the Need to reach the Municipal Court?Municipal Court?Municipal Court?Municipal Court?
