January 2011 City Connection Volume 7, Number 4 JANUARY 2011 www.huntsvilletx.gov Library to Sell Engraved Bricks The Huntsville Public Library, in conjunction with the Hunts- ville Public Library Board, is selling pavers to the public to raise money for the expansion and renovation of the library build- ing. These “Forever Bricks” will make up the Plaza at the new entrance of the Library near 13th Street. “This is a great way to make a lasting impression upon the new library,” Linda Dodson, City Librarian, said. “This is the com- munity’s library, and we hope the Plaza will represent the in- credible support the community has shown.” Each 4” x 8” “Forever Brick” is fired and guaranteed to last at least as long as the life of the library building. The pavers will sell for $20 each and be engraved with up to two lines of text of the purchaser’s choosing. Anyone wishing to purchase a “Forever Brick” may do so by filling out the form below and returning it to the Library. Forms may also be printed from the Library’s website at www.myhuntsvillelibrary.com or picked up from the Library in person. The renovation and expansion project, which broke ground in August 2010, has an estimated completion date of October 2011. Visitors to the Library will notice that construction is already well underway. Most recently, concrete for the new west and east wings has been poured and temporary walls built inside the original building. The Library will remain open throughout the construction process, but parking has been modified. Library staff would like to remind customers that parking is only allowed on the south side of 14th Street, at St. James United Methodist Church on Avenue M, and at City Hall. Handicapped parking is avail- able on the north side of 14th Street. Customers parked in business lots will be ticketed or towed. More details on the “Forever Bricks” and the renovation, in- cluding photographs, can be found at the Library’s blog, lo- cated at www.huntsvillepubliclibrary.blogspot.com. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-- Huntsville Public Library Forever Bricks Please fill out the form as completely as possible. Consciously reducing your water usage during these months could lower your sewer charge. You can reduce your usage by limiting or com- pletely eliminating outside watering. The new sewer average charge will be effective with the April billing (due in May). “Basically, the City of Huntsville would just like to advise residents to curtail any kind of outdoor watering, such as washing cars, in order to keep water consumption down during winter months,” said Jerri Weaver, City of Huntsville Billing and Revenue Manager. “Also, residents should be aware of any water leaks and make sure to have those repaired.” For more information, contact City of Hunts- ville Utility Billing at (936) 291-5431. It’s Winter Time… Let’s Recycle Antifreeze! Like many other residential customers, do you plan on replacing the antifreeze in your vehicle this winter? Do you plan on disposing of other kinds of liquids, including motor oil, peanut oil or cooking oil? Don’t run those materials down the drain – recycle them! The City of Huntsville Solid Waste Services De- partment offers free, year-round recycling for these liquids as well as other items for residen- tial customers at the Recycling Drop-Off Center, located at 590 I-45 North from 7:30 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Other items, including oil filters, are recycled in specifically marked collection barrels. As they are flammable, neither gasoline or diesel from lawn equipment nor vehicles will be accepted for disposal or recycling. If you have any questions, please call 936-294- 5743. City residents are reminded that, per City ordinance, they are specifically pro- hibited from using, possessing or even transporting fireworks into the city lim- its of Huntsville. Anyone stopped with fireworks will receive a class C misdemeanor, and your fireworks will be confiscated! So go nuts - stock up on plastic fedoras, sil- ver prismatic horns, leis, noisemakers and anything else you can get your hands on to make your New Year’s festivities fun and unique. Just don’t bring fireworks inside the City. Oh, and for you rebels who are formulating ways to use fireworks outside the City but within Walker County, be aware of the burn ban placed in effect on December 13. The ban was passed with an additional order which stated that any launching of aerial fireworks in the county will also result in a class C misdemeanor. Page 3 City Connection January 2011 In December, the City of Huntsville received confirmation that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would grant $392,000 in funding for additional preliminary engineering on Town Creek improvements.
