Proclamation No. 2024-21 Texas Correctional Education Conference Proclamation No. 2024-21 WHEREAS in 1966 Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) began to offer college courses through Lee College, this program grew quickly as it started by offering 5 classes and enrolling 176 students, in just two years the program grew to 688 students enrolled and 25 academic and vocational classes; and WHEREAS Lee College not only provides an education to their students, but also provides wraparound services for those returning into society through a 6-week course focusing on things such as skills, finances and job search; and WHEREAS as they help to prepare for reentry into society they also stay in touch and of assistance to their alumni continuing to help with resources for housing and jobs; and WHEREAS of the participants in Lee College the recidivism rate in 2020 was only 11.7%; and WHEREAS Lee College now is offered in nine facilities in Texas and furthers the education of about 1,200 students each semester fostering key traits such as good citizenship and strong work ethics. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Russell Humphrey, Mayor of Huntsville Texas, do hereby proclaim, SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2024, as TEXAS CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION DAY
