Initially sharing a church with the Baptist and Methodist congregations, the church established its own place of worship in 1969 in the Rogersville neighborhood, continuing its rich legacy of service, and faith; and WHEREAS over the years, First Missionary Baptist Church has seen the leadership of numerous dedicated pastors who have fostered growth and innovation within the church, creating impactful community-based programs and services that have enriched the lives of many; and WHEREAS the church has been honored by the contributions of several notable members, including Samuel Walker Houston and his father Joshua Houston Sr., who have exemplified the church’s enduring commitment to leadership, education, and community service; and WHEREAS the church’s historical significance is further highlighted by its role in nurturing community teachers, leaders, and business owners who have been integral in advancing the well-being of the Huntsville community; and WHEREAS First Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 155th Anniversary as well as its 73rd Homecoming, reflecting the church’s long-standing legacy of faith and service, honoring its past while looking forward to its future endeavors; and WHEREAS the City of Huntsville recognizes and commends First Missionary Baptist Church on its 155th Anniversary and 73rd Homecoming, honoring the church for its profound contributions and unwavering dedication to the Huntsville community. All citizens are encouraged to join in celebrating this significant milestone and to acknowledge the church’s lasting impact on our community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Russell Humphrey, Mayor of Huntsville Texas, do hereby proclaim, AUGUST 25th, 2024, as FIRST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH DAY
