Proclamation No. 2024-13
WHEREAS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that hinders the person’s ability to use their muscles; and
WHEREAS as military men and women have a greater chance of developing ALS there is not a known cause of the development, this leaves patients with only a two-to-five-year prognosis
at the date of diagnosis; and
WHEREAS securing access to new therapies, durable medical equipment, communication technologies and clinical trials is vital to enhancing quality of life for those living with ALS;
and
WHEREAS we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Ice Bucket Challenge through a renewed commitment to galvanize public awareness and support funding leading to significant investments
in ALS research; and
WHEREAS the ALS Association has committed over $154 million to support projects worldwide to accelerating the pace of discovery, hoping that ALS will soon be a livable and curable disease;
and
WHEREAS the City of Huntsville wishes to recognize Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month to advocate for increased funding and stand in solidarity with those affected.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Russell Humphrey, Mayor of Huntsville Texas,
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM the month of May 2024 as
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month
