SHSU 100th anniv. 1979-13RESOLUTION NO. 79 -13
WHEREAS, Sam Houston State University began as the first teacher - training
institution west of the Mississippi with its establishment on April 21, 1879
as Sam Houston Normal Institute, having its first classes on October 10, 1879
with 110 students; and
WHEREAS, in 1918, the curriculum was expanded to four years and in 1923
it became known as Sam Houston State Teacher's College, Sam Houston State
College in 1965, and finally as Sam Houston State University in 1969; and
WHEREAS, Sam Houston State University has achieved state, regional and
national accreditation and offers an academic program which provides under-
graduate majors in 51 disciplines, graduate majors in 39, eight undergraduate
degrees, seven graduate, including a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. A total of
44,226 degrees have been conferred since the first four year degrees were
awarded in 1919 -1920. Affiliations are also held with the Lone Star Conference
and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Inter-
collegiate Athletics for Women; and
WHEREAS, Sam Houston State University has experienced a strong and
healthy growth over the last 100 years and now prospers with land and
facilities covering some 1,315 acres valued in excess of $65 million and
boasts an enrollment of 10,544 students on its campus for the Fall semester
of 1979; and
WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville recognizes the growth and prosperity
which has come to the community because of Sam Houston State University and
realizes the fine quality of this growth; and
WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville wishes to join in with those at Sam
Houston State University to celebrate the occasion of its 100th year and to
offer its continued support of the university community;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the
City of Huntsville, Texas that all citizens of the community join in the
Centennial Celebration and recognize the accomplishments and progress
attained by Sam Houston State University over its 100 years.
