Proc. 2010-24 Sam Houston and Texas Independence Day 03-02-10PROCLAMATION

March 2nd is officially designated and recognized as General Sam
Houston's Birthday as well as Texas Independence Day; and
WHEREAS the Texas Declaration of Independence was the formal declaration of
independence of the Republic of Texas from Mexico in the Texas
Revolution and was adopted at the Convention of z836 at Washington -on-
the- Brazos on March 2,1836; and
WHEREAS inz862, Houston returned to Huntsville as the hills in Huntsville reminded
him of his boyhood home near Maryville, Tennessee, and Houston died
quietly on July 26,1863 at the Steamboat House with his wife Murgaret in
attendance; and
WHEREAS annually, the Walker County Historical Commission, Sam Houston
Memorial Museum and Sam Houston Statue & Visitors Center celebrate
and commemorate these events.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBYPROCLAULRD, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

be declared: "Sam Houston and Texas Independence Day"
in the City of Huntsville, and call upon our citizens to observe this day,
which honors the birth of a Texas hero and the independence of our great
state.
