WHEREAS tens of millions of Americans have served in the Armed Forces of the United States during the past century, with hundreds of thousands of these men and women giving their lives
as the ultimate sacrifice to and for their country; and
WHEREAS these contributions and sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces is vital in maintaining the freedoms enjoyed by Americans; and
WHEREAS the advent of the all-volunteer Armed Forces resulted in a reduction in familiarity of awareness with the Armed Forces by young people of the nature and importance of the accomplishments
of those who have served in the Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS it is essential that the important role veterans have played and continue to play in protecting democracy, equality, and the current way of life known to Americans is held up
as a cornerstone of this community and this country;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
November 5-11, 2007
be declared
VETERANS AWARENESS WEEK
in the City of Huntsville for the purpose of emphasizing recognition of and appreciation for the contributions and sacrifices of veterans.
