WHEREAS Judge Baker received a B. A. in English in 1954 from Rice University, a J.D. from University of Texas Law School in 1957 and in 1958 she was admitted to practice in Federal
Court; and
WHEREAS She began her career in 1957 practicing both civil and criminal law. She continued to engage in the general practice of law until 1970; and
WHEREAS In 1972 she transitioned into the role of educator. She served as an instructor and assistant professor for Sam Houston State University at the Institute of Contemporary Corrections
and the Behavioral Sciences until 1997; and
WHEREAS She served as Judge for the County Court at Law in Walker County, Texas from 1981 until 1995; in January 1995 she became a State Judge, Visiting Trial Judge; and
WHEREAS She is a member of many professional, civic and social organizations to include State Bar of Texas, Walker County Bar Association, Texas Center for the Judiciary – Judicial Section,
State Bar of Texas – Juvenile Section, Family Law Section and Criminal Law Section, Huntsville Chapter of Women’s Forum, Women’s Christian Club, Walker County Fair Association – Lifetime
member and Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS From 1963 – 1995 she has served on numerous boards and held many chairmanships; in 1993 she received the Criminal Justice Alumni Distinguished Service Award for 1993; and
WHEREAS She has been a member of the State Bar of Texas for more than 50 years; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
