22-literacy-2007PROCLAMATION 2007-22 WHEREAS International Literacy Day was first observed on September 8, 1967, to focus attention on the need to promote worldwide literacy; and WHEREAS The Chairman of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declares International Literacy Day every September to focus attention on literacy worldwide;and WHEREAS It is estimated that more than 30% of adults in Huntsville and Walker County are limited in their ability to read and write English; and WHEREAS International Literacy Day and Huntsville Literacy Day call attention to promote literacy and education to our community; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville that: September 14, 2007 be proclaimed “HUNTSVILLE LITERACY DAY” in the City of Huntsville.
