20-jd-dudley-dayPROCLAMATION NO. 2007-20 WHEREAS, on Sunday evening, May 27, 2007, five teenage girls from Huntsville were involved in a tragic one car accident north of the entrance to Elkins Lake on the Interstate 45 Feeder Road; WHEREAS, J. D. Dudley, of Pasadena, Texas, was visiting friends in Huntsville and was due to return home on Monday, but late Sunday evening he decided to leave early; WHEREAS, Mr. Dudley was driving South on Interstate 45 when he witnessed the accident involving our young teens; LeeAnn Green, Sara Davis, Katy Rudd, Rebecca Whitehead and Rebecca Nash; WHEREAS, Mr. Dudley immediately pulled his car over, ran through the grassy median and across the access road to render aid. The two girls in the front seat (LeeAnn Green and Katy Rudd) were able to go get out of the car on their own, but the other three girls were trapped in the back seat; WHEREAS, Mr. Dudley, setting aside personal risks, crawled in a side window waist deep, with his legs sticking out the car where he immediately notice that two girls (Rebecca Whitehead and Sara Davis) seemed stable, but Rebecca Nash was not breathing. He informed a citizen on the phone with 911 dispatch that he was aware that he should not move her in case of a neck injury, but she was not breathing and he needed to clear her airway; WHEREAS, he cleared her airway and held her head in a position in which she could breath for at least ten minutes until the paramedics could reach her and render additional aid; WHEREAS, due to Mr. Dudley’s clear thinking, fast action, first aid training and his persistence to help these girls, Rebecca Nash is alive today; and WHEREAS, Mr. Dudley’s bravery and selflessness are an inspiration to us all and for which our community is sincerely grateful; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: July 17, 2007 be declared: J . D. Dudley Day in Huntsville, Texas, and encourage all of our citizens to thank Mr. Dudley for his heroic actions on that Sunday evening.
