19-cancer-survivor-day PROCLAMATION NO. 2007-19 WHEREAS, today 9.8 million Americans have a history of cancer and are considered cancer survivors, thanks to advances in early cancer detection, treatment and research; and WHEREAS, major scientific breakthroughs in the last fifteen years have changed the way we think about cancer; and WHEREAS, today, sixty percent of people diagnosed with cancer survive the disease; and WHEREAS, Texas has an active, productive survivor population, demonstrating that a cancer diagnosis is no longer an automatic death sentence; and WHEREAS, the survivors living in Huntsville, Texas and Walker County want to provide newly diagnosed individuals with strength through the HOPE concept (Helping Offer Positive Encouragement) which empowers them to defeat this disease; and WHEREAS, communities all across Texas will be celebrating life by participating in the recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: June, 2007 be declared: Huntsville HOPE Month in Huntsville, Texas.
