30-literacyPROCLAMATION 2006 - 30 WHEREAS International Literacy Day was first observed on September 8, 1967, to focus attention on the need to promote worldwide literacy; and WHEREAS The Chairman of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared September 8, 2006 as International Literacy Day; and WHEREAS It is estimated that one fifth of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write (nearly two-thirds of this number are women), and that more than 100 million children lack access to education. It is also estimated that more than 30% of adults in Walker County are limited in their ability to read and write English; and WHEREAS International Literacy Day and Huntsville Literacy Day call attention to promote literacy and education to our community; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Huntsville that: September 8, 2006 be proclaimed “HUNTSVILLE LITERACY DAY” in the City of Huntsville.
