WHEREAS Daniel Wilbert Mitchell was born in 1916, the son of Jessie B. and Chanie Bell Mitchell. Daniel was one of six children born and raised in the community of Mt. Zion, New Waverly,
Texas; and
WHEREAS Daniel received his early education while attending the Mt. Zion public school system and later graduated from Jack Yates High School in Houston, Texas; and
WHEREAS As a young man, Daniel married Effie Lee Foote and the couple went on to be blessed with four children, two boys and two girls; and
WHEREAS He later accepted his calling into the ministry of God in 1945 where he attended the Union Baptist Theological Seminary with emphasis in church administration and management;
and
WHEREAS He has served as the Pastor for Mt. Zion First Baptist, his home-church, for 50 years, at Pine Bluff Missionary Baptist Church for 30 years and at Robinson Hill Missionary Baptist
Church for 30 years yielding an impressive tenure of pasturing experience exceeding 100 years. Daniel is presently serving as the Emeritus Dean of Congress and Emeritus Pastor of all
three churches; and
WHEREAS He held various offices in the Central District Baptist Association from 1952 until his retirement in 1999. He served as Dean of Congress and was named Dean Emeritus of Congress
at the time of his retirement. He was also very instrumental in developing professionals in many different fields including medical, education, law and law enforcement, corrections,
and transportation to name a few; and
WHEREAS He has performed countless marriage ceremonies and offered family counseling services. He has mentored two ministers that are currently pastoring and four ministers that are
preachers; and
WHEREAS He was included in the monument wall featuring the personalities of various individuals for their many contributions and inspired visions towards developing and maintaining
an enhanced community in Walker and surrounding counties; and
WHEREAS He was presented a key to the City of Willis, Texas in September 2002 in recognition of his years of committed service to that community; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me, as the Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

“D.W. Mitchell Day”
In Huntsville, Texas, in recognition of his 90th Birthday we encourage all citizens to acknowledge and commend D.W. Mitchell for nine decades of unwavering service to God and to his
fellow man.
