PROCLAMATION NO. 2005-31
WHEREAS, The SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers use their many talents and capabilities in preserving
an important part of our natural heritage that people from throughout Texas can enjoy for years to come;
and
WHEREAS, The SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers look for opportunities to improve our communities
and make it a better place to live; and
WHEREAS, the SBC, Gulf Coast Council Pioneers , the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (N.A.S.A.), and the City of Huntsville jointly participated in the establishment of
a Living Memorial to the Memory of the Challenger Seven Astronauts; and
WHEREAS, The Living Memorial consisting of seven oak trees were planted on March 1, 1990, adjacent to the City Fire Station #2 on South Sam Houston Avenue from tree stock purchased by
the SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers; and
WHEREAS, The SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers donated over $200.00 in cash and $500.00 worth of books to the Huntsville Public Library in honor of the victims of September 11, 2001; and
WHEREAS, the donation was made in memory of Darwin Snell, former president of the Sam Houston Club. Also, Peggy Schmidt, the president of the Council said “the Freedom to Read project
is donating books all over the Houston area to honor the victims of the tragedies”; and
WHEREAS, The SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers with the help of the Sabine Neches Club were the proud sponsors for NASA Astronaut Dr. Ellen Baker for Roy Guess Elementary’s Space 2000
Event, a week of activities for the boys and girls; and
WHEREAS, the event was a huge success due to a concerted effort of the SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers; and
WHEREAS, the Visitor’s Welcome sign that hangs outside the entrance to the Statue of General Sam Houston was donated by the Gulf Coast Council Pioneers and South Texas Chapter ; and
WHEREAS, concrete picnic tables and an amphitheatre were constructed and donated to the City of Huntsville at the Sam Houston Statue Park under the leadership of the Sam Houston Club,
Lillie Mae Hayman, Cecil Grimes, AARP President Joe King and Poncho Roberts; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
September 20, 2005
be declared: SBC Gulf Coast Council Pioneers Day
and by doing so call attention to the unselfish Spirit of Giving, Kindness and Good Will exhibited by the Telecom Pioneers of America that make a difference in our communities.
