29-King's Appreciation Recept
PROCLAMATION NO. 2005-29
WHEREAS In 1927, James H. “Jimmy” King began work at the St. Regis Confectionery in Houston and started what was to become a sweet and successful career; and
WHEREAS In 1931, the Great Depression forced a lay off, and later that year he was hired by Weingarten Co. to open a candy factory which would supply candy to their large chain of stores;
and
WHEREAS In 1933, King secretly married Laura Driskell, a young lady he had previously hired as head of personnel. The marriage was secret as it was against company policy for co-workers
to marry; in 1944 the couple moved to Lovelady, Texas, and opened “La King’s,” a wholesale factory which produced three thousand pounds of candy daily; and
WHEREAS In 1962, the Lovelady business closed but the family tradition continued at “King’s” in Huntsville owned by Larry and Dianne King who carried on the art of confection- making
in a turn-of-the-century setting; Larry and Dianne King sold the business this summer to a local area business man, Steed Smith, Jr.; and
WHEREAS Through the years, Larry and Dianne King helped to promote our community with their great hospitality; they shared their time and many wonderful talents with the Main Street
Program and the Huntsville Tourism Council; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
September 1, 2005
be declared:
King’s Appreciation Day
in Huntsville, Texas, and encourage the citizens of Huntsville to show their appreciation for the King’s many years of devoted service to our community.
