WHEREAS For the last 65 years individuals, organizations, and institutions in Huntsville and Walker County have been blessed with the energy, kindness, service, leadership, and love
that characterized the life of Lu Ellen Evans Gibbs; and
WHEREAS Hardly a civic or charitable organization in Huntsville has gone untouched by her leadership and willingness to share; and
WHEREAS The quality of life in Huntsville is nourished by the Arts and Lu Ellen was truly a Patron of the Arts. Having met her late husband Phil through their involvement in Community
Theater, Lu Ellen served on the Board of the Huntsville Arts Commission, helped to create and served on the board of the J. Phillip Gibbs Centre for the Performing Arts, and provided
generous support for the Old Town Theater; and
WHEREAS She attended Texas Christian University as an under graduate and then received her Master’s degree from Sam Houston State University. As a graduate and Distinguished Alumnus
of Sam Houston State University, Lu Ellen generously supported a variety of University activities. She founded and supported the President’s Distinguished Lecturer series, provided
scholarships, enthusiastically supported the golf and softball programs, and considered the Lu Ellen Gibbs Open Golf Tournament that provided financial support for the Sam Houston golf
program among her highest honors; and
WHEREAS For 30 years Lu Ellen provided leadership to the medical community by her service as a member of the Huntsville Memorial Hospital (HMH) Board of Directors. She was also a member
of the Joe G. Davis School of Vocational Nursing Advisory Board. But Lu Ellen’s interest in the hospitalized went beyond her Board memberships. As a member of the HMH Auxiliary she
routinely paid for and delivered newspapers to every patient at the hospital each Sunday morning after attending worship services at First Christian Church; and
WHEREAS As a devoted member of the First Christian Church of Huntsville for over 65 years Lu Ellen brightened the life of the membership and ministers with her full support of every
church activity and project. Her encouragement, attendance, and smile will be sorely missed by those who each Sunday looked for her on “Lu Ellen’s Pew;”
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as the Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Huntsville, Texas, that

LU ELLEN EVANS GIBBS DAY
in Huntsville, Texas, and City Council urges the citizens of our community to acknowledge and express appreciation for the 65 years of dedicated service, leadership, kindness and love
that Lu Ellen Gibbs has brought to this community.
