18-martinez-50PROCLAMATION NO. 2005-18 WHEREAS Andrew and Ila met in October 1954 and married on May 27, 1955. The Martinez’ had three children; Debbie and Andrea were born while they resided in Conroe, and Russell who was born following their move to Huntsville; and WHEREAS Andrew opened his own business, Martinez Tire and Supply, while Ila worked in the family restaurant and took care of the children; and WHEREAS During the 1970’s Andrew was elected to Huntsville City Council, and became ordained as a Baptist Minister. In 1978 their youngest daughter Andrea married Wayne Scott, and their only grandchild, Angela was born in 1983. Debbie, their oldest daughter, passed away in 1982; and WHEREAS Andrew become actively involved in the Republican Party in 1988, serving as County Chair from 1996-2000, while Ila served as an officer at every level of the Walker County Republican Women’s Club, serving as President from 1998-2000;and WHEREAS The Martinez’ are very active in the community where they are members of Second Baptist Church, continuing to be active in the Republican Party, with Andrew a past member of the HISD Board of Trustees and a current member of Trinity River Authority and Gulf Coast Trades Center, and Ila a member of the local chapter of the Red Hat Society and a volunteer for the HEARTS Veterans Museum; and WHEREAS The Martinez’, who are caring individuals, their marriage serving as a testament of their love for each other and commitment to family, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 27, 2005; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Huntsville, Texas that: June 5, 2005 be declared: Andrew and Ila Martinez Day in Huntsville, Texas and urge the community to wish the Martinez’ many more happy years.
