PROCLAMATION NO. 2005-16
WHEREAS Motorcycling is a very popular form of transportation and recreation for many Texans. Our beautiful roadways and year-long riding season contribute to Texas having one of
the nation’s largest motorcycling populations. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), more than 700,000 Texans are licensed to operate a motorcycle; and
WHEREAS Operating a motorcycle safely requires mental and physical skills. Riders develop their expertise by attending professionally taught motorcycle operator training courses,
obtaining knowledge of and following traffic laws and requirements, and acquiring sound judgment and expertise through personal experience; and
WHEREAS The basic and advanced motorcycle operator training courses offered by DPS provide information on the use of proper protective equipment, among other helpful instructions,
together with motorist awareness programs. These programs contribute to reducing the number of motorcycle-related crashes and associated injuries and fatalities. Since 1983, more than
180,000 Texas motorcyclists have completed a motorcycle operator training course, with more than 26,000 attending in 2004; and
WHEREAS Promoting motorcycle safety and motorist awareness of motorcycles are continuing priorities. Accessible at www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb, the DPS Motorcycle Safety Unit
offers invaluable information that is key to furthering safety and overall awareness;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED, by the power vested in me as
Mayor of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:

in Huntsville, Texas an encourage all residents to join DPS is its motorcycle safety and awareness campaign by doing their best to ensure the safety of motorcyclists and other users
of our roadways.
