WHEREAS Johnnie Jo Sowell Dickenson has been the President of the Walker County Genealogical Society since 1995;
WHEREAS Under her direction, the Society has
Compiled the Marriage Records of Walker County from 1846-1880
Updated the local cemetery books including South Walker County, North Walker County, Black Cemeteries of Walker County; and in the process of City and Prison cemeteries
Through donations, has purchased a map case, two microfilm reader/printers and file cabinets for the Library
Purchased numerous titles for the Genealogy collection, including books, microfilm, magazines, CD-ROM, and web based services
Successfully spearheaded various projects providing local family information found only in the Huntsville Public Library, including “Pioneer Registry of Walker County”, “First Families
of Walker County, “Century Families of Walker County”, “Bible Records”, and “First Polish Families”
Obtained the unique “Virginia Ivy Humphrey Genealogical Records”, “Frances Punchard McCulloch Genealogical Records” and the “Mary Virginia Atkinson Smither Texana Collection”
Sponsored and provided assistance at the Genealogy lock-ins in February and October, as well as, other genealogy related workshops
Contributed funding and information to Huntsville Public Library’s “Walker County Treasurers” and “Tides in Early Texas History” digitization projects; and
WHEREAS Johnnie Jo has contributed countless hours of volunteer time and expertise with the Genealogy Society and developing the Genealogy Collection; and
WHEREAS On September 21, 2004, City Council unanimously voted to rename the Genealogy/Texana/Local History Room as the Johnnie Jo Sowell Dickenson Genealogy Room;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, by the power vested in me as Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Huntsville, Texas that:
